V is for Vegetables in Hamburger Helper

We like Hamburger Helper in our house. We REALLY like it. My daughter LOVES it. She's made it twice just this week. But, we also add vegetables to it. It's not just meat, sauce and noodles for us.

First Deb made Beef Noodle Helper to which she added French-style green beans. It was delicious. Today she made Philly Cheesesteak Helper and added whole kernel corn and peas. I might have liked it better without the peas, but it's still good. It's not that I don't like peas, but they added a "sweet" to it that I'd have rather not had in something called Philly Cheesesteak.

Adding vegetables allows Hamburger Helper to be a one pan meal instead of having to dirty another pan to cook a vegetable separately.

Do you make Hamburger Helper (or something similar)? When you do, do you change it up in any way?

  1. My kids love hamburger helper, and I like it because it is quick and easy. I usually take the box's suggestions on the additions and toppings to make it even better.

    1. Exactly - and it's just so quick to make if you're in a rush or late making a meal.

  2. My way to make hamburger helper is to not buy the box. I do make similar dishes in the same amount of time, but I use my own pantry to select the additions to the hamburger. I make a roux in the burger/onion browning and then I add, potatoes, or noodles, lots of water, whatever veggie I think will a good match, often broccoli broken up tiny and then I season with whatever sounds good cover and cook. Before serving I add cheese, because I believe everything is better with cheese!

    1. I know it's full of sodium, but we're not all that creative without the foundation already being there. LOL

  3. I'll do Hamburger Helper, usually with ground turkey instead of ground beef, and frequently will add broccoli.

I do like side salads as my "green" with dinner though.

    1. Broccoli is a definite option since we both like it. But, we'd probably add it to a Chicken or Tuna Helper rather than a beef one.

  4. I just watched make a goolosh (sp?) tonight. It was basically hamburger helper with elbow macaroni and really simple to make. Like Bev above, she used ground turkey with the ground beef. I'm gonna try it and post it for a Tasty Tuesday...

    1. Were you watching Paula Deen, too? She makes Bobby's Goulash, which isn't the "real" thing, but sure does look good. I have used turkey or chicken in place of beef before, but it depends on the recipe whether or not you can tell.

    1. I can see using canned chicken or ham in place of the tuna in Tuna Helper. Or some super shredded chicken. I need to pick up some Tuna Helpers some time.

    1. Check out the different flavors they have. You might see one you want to try again. We also buy the store brand ones. They're nice for a quickie dinner ready in minutes.
